As mentioned in a previous post, I’ve made a pork themed meal for my husband’s birthday for several years running now. Its always fun to come up with a different concept each year and think through the recipes for each of the courses. Last year’s surprise party was so much fun that I decided to do a scaled down version for a small group of … Continue reading Menu Planning: Toby’s Backyard Birthday BBQ
Our sweet, funny little man just turned 2! We hosted a party at our house for our friends and family and had a few of Oliver’s friends over too. I love using literary themes for kids birthday parties as there are so many personal touches you can make with them. Last year, I picked “Brown Bear, Brown Bear” by Eric Carle for his first birthday … Continue reading Little Blue Truck Birthday Party
Every year around the holidays, we always get together with my aunt and uncle, who live close by, and my cousin, who is down visiting her parents from New York. Each year, the food and company are amazing and we usually exchange foodie type gifts, which are always welcome! In November, my dad had brought out some frozen brook trout he caught in Illinois and … Continue reading Menu Planning: Seafood Paella, Baked Trout, Braised Cabbage and Raspberry Jam Tart
I’m always on the look out for good, healthy breakfasts and snacks for my toddler – and let’s face it, ones that I don’t mind eating either! I had some bananas to use up so mini muffins sounded like a great idea, but I wanted to add in peanut butter for some additional protein and ground flax seed to up the fiber content. The peanut … Continue reading Banana Peanut Butter Mini Muffins
My friend Meredith, and her three month old sweet baby Ian, joined me for an afternoon of holiday cookie baking. I selected the cookies and she helped me scoop, bake and sample (purely for quality control purposes!) the cookies. Most of these cookies are destined for our friends’ bellies, but we couldn’t help keeping a few for ourselves. I picked all these recipes to give … Continue reading Holiday Cookies
Earlier this month, my friend Becky, of Becky Bakes, suggested we enter an apple pie competition together and I loved the idea. My first collaboration with this blog! She is a fantastic baker and I’ve had her amazing sweet treats many times so I knew she would be a great partner. We entered the 1st Annual Adams Morgan Apple Pie Competition this past weekend and … Continue reading Award Winning Apple Pie!
We recently hosted dinner for my cousin and I wanted to put a menu together highlighting the great veggies that are growing in my garden or that can be found at the farmer’s market. I’m a regular attendee of the farmer’s markets, hitting up at least one, sometimes two, on the weekends and I love using fresh produce. I had an idea for adapting pot … Continue reading Blackberry Pot Pies
After our recent peach picking excursion, I wanted to make a peach crisp, but also wanted to control the portion sizes so decided to make them in small ramekins. They were loaded with peaches with just a little crumble on top. They baked up delicious and seemed so healthy, I added a small scoop of vanilla ice cream on top for a bit of a Sunday night indulgence. Continue reading Individual Peach Crisp
